MODVestiges of the Present introduces challenges from an unknown powerful creature, which are designed to be compatible with any mod in a modpack. These challenges aim to balance modpacks where some mods might be overpowered or underpowered, requiring players to engage with a broader range of content to progress. Completing challenges or obtaining advancements provides a chance to acquire Vestiges, which are described as mighty tools for both PVP and PVE, offering abilities not found in other mods.

The mod also includes a global leaderboard system for all players with internet access, accessible in single-player or on servers, though it is currently frozen. An optional 'Cruel' mode, activated via a command, significantly increases the difficulty of boss encounters from any mod, giving them quadrupled health and damage, substantial armor, damage reduction, health regeneration, and protective shields. In this mode, starving and drowning damage become unblockable, mobs have a chance to spawn empowered, and regular mobs may appear with random modpack armor, offering powerful drops that allow for negative enchantments and enchantment limit exceeding. All values and the boss list in Cruel mode are configurable.
